30+ Winter Street Style Snaps From NY Fashion Week

on

New York Fashion Week was quite nippy this time around so you’d expect a lot of frumpy fashionistas battling the cold in their toughest arctic-worthy gear. But, alas, they surprised us by making due with their duds and somehow, as if by magic, turning them into some of the finest looks we’ve ever laid eyes on. The trick – color, color, and more color. Pink, yellow, orange, and blue were everywhere! It was as if spring had sprung!

Others opted for texture  – the fur was flying. We can’t help but think the Olympic games in Sochi had a little something to do with it. Plus, we spotted a couple of gutsy ladies wearing the PVC trend. Not warm but, hey, at least they looked amazing.

If you need some help getting a handle on your cold weather style these last few weeks of the cold season, we snapped over 30 guys and girls on the streets of NYC who will help inspire you to wear something other than your puffy coat. In fact, this winter street style might even help you get some ideas for the warmer months ahead.

6 Items That Will Get You Noticed at NYFW

on

These six fashion editor approved essentials are sure to get you noticed this fashion week…

      1. Cool Outerwear: A/W fashion week falls in the beginning of February every year so it’s inevitable that outerwear will be a staple of your ensemble. Our fave for the past couple of seasons has been the tomboy-chic bomber also referred to as a varsity jacket. The best way to get noticed by the massive heard of street style photogs patrolling NYC during NYFW is by choosing one in a bold print. Floral or a black and white window pane print are our top picks.
      2. Wild Carryall: Whether you’re a blogger going from show to show or just a fashionable onlooker checking out the runway via Style.com, having a chic carryall in your closet is a must. All-over logo prints are everywhere for Spring. If incorporating them into a piece of clothing is too much, why not try an accessory? We like the MCM’s revamped backpack – they had a serious moment in the 90s hip hop scene. (Can’t you totally see Lil Kim rocking one?!) And, hey, IT IS Throwback Thursday, after all!
      3. Shades: When getting snapped avoid the curse of camera shyness while, ahem, covering up your unwanted eye circles with a kooky pair of sunnies. The weeklong cycle of parties, shows, and madness are bound to take their toll and when they do show ’em who’s boss. Take charge with a wacky color or bold-shaped frame. Oversized Miu Miu cat eyes? Don’t mind if we do!
      4. Ankle Strap Heels: NYC is generally a walking city. When you’re traveling around the island during NYFW it’s cabs, cabs, cabs. And, the subway, sometimes – if we have to. If your main mode of transport for the week will bring you from cab to curb, wear your heels! Right now we are mega-obsessed with ankle-strap pumps. Splurge on a pair of Alexander Wang’s or steal these floral print statement-makers from Target for $29.99.
      5. Phone Charger: I mean, the whole point of going to NYFW is to brag about it on Instagram, right? Yeah, we thought so. With all the snapping you’ll be doing it’s a smart move or shall we say power play to suit ip your iPhone with an all-in-one case charger. Because, let’s be honest – having a dead battery in NOT CHIC.
      6. Crop Top: If you haven’t noticed, skin is in. Yes, even in winter! Show off those mid drifts in a transitional winter-to-spring boxy crop top. Feeling eccentric? Pair it with a matching bottom – cigarette pants or a full skirt – for a suit that is sure to get your on every street style blog this NYFW 2014. Maybe even ours? 😉

Teresa Moore Talks About Resolutions, Life as a Model, and Her Best Beauty Tips After a Night Out!

Visit Teresa Moore ’s Shopcade and follow her to find out more about her style!

One of our favorite models, Teresa Moore, talks about resolutions, how it feels to be working with the likes of Ralph Lauren and Vogue magazine, and of course shares all of her style and beauty tips with Shopcade.

We are a few days before NYE! What’s the one habit that you promised you will change in the New Year?

Being late. It’s not good and gets me stressed. I think peace is all about finesse.

And what are your personal and business plans for the near future?

Keep on modelling hopefully, have two gorgeous children with the man I love, and build an online business that allows me to work from anywhere in the world.

Haha, we are with you on the online business one! And speaking of business, you have worked with brands such as Ralph Lauren and H&M. Are there any cool stories from the photo sets that you would like to share with us?

When working for H&M, the team was really cool (as Swedish people usually are), and once we shot in Turks and Caicos on the beautiful white sand beaches and on very large driftwood trees which were on the sandbank. We had a camp set up on a sand bank off the island and set up tents and put some equipment there. One of the location guys slept there overnight and didn’t realize we were using the driftwood trees in the pictures and the next day we came back and he had chopped them up and used them to make a fire overnight! It was hilarious and thank God the photographer and client were cool about it!

How has growing up in a small Pacific island and then going to places like New York and Milan changed the way you see the world?

Tonga was a microcosm of expats from all around the world and also very traditional with local culture like feasts, dancing and singing. I think living in New York now I also have the worldly expat community which I find diverse and fulfilling, and culturally there is so much going on you can always be inspired. I think the noise level and material waste (Americans double-bag everything!) was a shock when I moved to a big city. Both are really exciting and vibrant places to live.

What’s the best thing about modelling and what is the biggest misconception people have about your work?

The best thing about modelling is the travel, opportunities and the money which you can all use to build an interesting future. I think the biggest misconception about modelling is that it’s easy! It’s very physical; from working out to stay in shape, long 10-12 hour shoot days, running all over the city for castings, jet lag, airports and more jet lag. You also have to develop a thick skin about what people say and possible rejection for something you don’t entirely control (your genetics) and that takes a little confidence and soul searching.

Your modeling career started when you were quite young. What are the things you wish you knew before you entered the fashion arena?

I wish I knew that people and networking means a lot. I wish I knew that dressing better and cooler adds to your persona. I was just a dorky kid from down under! Once you model for a while you develop systems for traveling, working out, dealing with difficult people and knowing how to model a wide-leg pant or a bikini. Things get easier as you learn the whole business better.

We guess there is a learning curve for everything… Let’s talk about style! What are your must-haves for this winter?

My new Sandro wool coat with leather trim! So cool.

What’s the one thing that you are waiting patiently from a fashion designer to come up with?

More cushy insoles inside cool shoes!

#GiftThisHB: Shopping Party in NYC

on

Last Thursday we gathered at Henri Bendel in NYC to celebrate the holidays with a whole lotta shopping and little champagne sipping – or was it the other way around? Either way, the most important detail of the event is that that evening we also OFFICIALLY launched our Android and revamped iOS apps. Woot!!

Our featured ambassadors from Her Campus and StyleList led the charge, demo-ing the app to shoppers while our lovely hostess, Christine, from NYC Pretty helped guests make the perfect holiday gift picks.

Shopcade

#ShopcadeStyle ambassadors (L – R), Divya Bahl (Senior manager of client services), Michelle Lewis (Senior Editor), Kelsey Thorn (Designer), and Chelsea Evans (Director of Operations) from Her Campus with their iPads in tow, all set to show off our brand spanking new app.

3 Holiday Nail Looks from NYC Nail Artist Extrordinaire, Miss Ladyfinger

on

Collages

Taryn Multack, better known by her profesh name, Miss Ladyfinger is a nail artist living in NYC. The Syracuse U grad majored in fashion design but uses her trained eye to turn digits (in lieu of fabric) into haute couture. She finds trends everywhere – from the streets to the catwalk – to create her cutting edge nail art. Her goal is to make the world a more stylish and, ahem, polished place.

We think she’s doing a pretty good job so we caught up with Taryn to talk about her designer wish list, 2014 nail trends, and tips (get it) for every girl on new ways to style their holiday nails.

If you could have ONE designer item under your tree/menorah/kwanzaa bush this year, what would it be?

A drawstring backpack from The Row.

Nail polish is getting banned. You can only safely stow away ONE color. Which one is it?

I’d have to say Peridot by Chanel.

2014 is almost here! Last year was all about the pointy nail, what new nail trend do we have to look forward to in months ahead?

My new favorite thing ever— matte! And nude. Together they look really chic.

Imagine you have three girlfriends. One lives Uptown, one lives Downtown, and one lives in Brooklyn. How would you paint their nails for a holiday party?

Easy…

Brooklyn Babe – Eclectic

We managed to chat with her about Christmas gifts, her collaboration with Jay Z and his music label, and her hottest spots in London and New York!

With Christmas getting really close, we really have to start this interview with questions about presents! What has been the best present you have received?

My boyfriend designed a necklace for me with my best friend and I haven’t taken it off since. I love four-leaf clovers, and they made a little silver clover with H’s on each leaf. It’s amazing.

What would be your dream holiday destination? Would you prefer Santa’s village or someplace warm and sunny?

I’m a sucker for a beach.

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

Love Actually.

What are your favorite tunes for the festive season?

Mariah Carey, Wham, The Waitresses.

What is the one thing that you can’t have enough of during Christmas?

Mum’s cooking! Chocolate! Presents! Can Christmas be all year, please?
