Boohoo’s StyleFix Editor Talks Top Trends For Summer

on
NB250414-boohoosummertrends

We have nothing but mega love for Boohoo here at Shopcade HQ, so we were pretty chuffed to land a quick Q&A with the lovely Emma, Boohoo’s Stylefix Editor (yes that is her in our lovely circle of fame above!) to talk all about the upcoming trends for the season ahead. Check out her must have festival buys below…

Hey Emma! So spill, what do you think are the top trends for SS14, and which ones are your faves?

The catwalk saw a heavy sports influence in embellished sweats and athletic looking socks with sandals. Each season we see sport done in a different way and this spring it’s better than ever. Metallics are a huge trend at the moment, because nothing looks as mesmerising as a glittering metallic piece on a hot summer’s day, from skirts and dresses to clutch bags, this is one for all you magpies out there.

Eastern inspired and flowing with tassels, the Dolce and Gabbana show was something to behold too. Come summer everything gets a little more relaxed and bohemian and this collection transports you to faraway shores. A key piece is the tasselled bag, invest now and team with sheer layers to get the look. Pastels are an obvious spring trend, but I personally can’t get enough. Christopher Kane sent pastel drenched models in midi skirts and sweatshirts down his runway and it was one of my favourite SS14 shows.

Which celeb is nailing it right now style wise?

One celeb that never fails to inspire me is Solange Knowles,  she always gets it right. We could all steal a little of her style! The bright colours, the bold lipsticks, the clashing prints; she’s not afraid to mix it up and stand out. And with summer just around the corner, she’s the perfect celeb to look to.

If we were going to pick one essential to have in our wardrobe, what should it be?

For me, it’s all about a simple black midi dress. I have a couple, from cami and high neck styles to midi t-shirt dresses. Such a simple piece can be styled so many different ways by mixing it with different jackets, accessories and shoes. Buy one and you’ll wonder what you ever did without it!

Festival season has just kicked off- what are some tips to be best dressed at the fest?

Festivals are all about having fun, and it all starts with fashion! So don’t be afraid to stand out, they’re the perfect place to experiment with bright colours, loud accessories and quirky sunglasses. If you’re feeling bold test out henna tattoos and body embellishments like Kendall Jenner did at this year’s Coachella festival – we totally loved her look!

And never leave without packing layers, wellies and something waterproof, it is NOT about getting caught out by the weather!

Alyssa Julya Smith Talks About Her Must-Have Holiday Accessory, Dream Vacay and the BEST Things About Being a Model

Visit Alyssa Julya Smith’s Shopcade and follow her to find out more about her style!

Do models get to keep all the clothes after a fashion shoot? Can an Alexander Wang bag save an entire outfit? Would Balmain design the perfect Christmas tree? Los Angeles-based model and actress Alyssa Julya Smith gives answers to all these burning hot questions, and offers some solid fashion advice for this Christmas Special Q&A.

Hi Alyssa, Christmas is here! Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year’s holidays?

My new druzy geode and gold-plated earrings by Heather Hawkins.

What has been the best present you have received? And the one you would rather forget about?

The best present I received was my dog back in 2006! Now that is the gift that keeps on giving!

Growing up, the worst presents always came from my older brother, Blake. He would take things I already owned, wrap them and put them under the tree as a prank. But I guess that’s what brothers are for!

What would be your dream holiday destination? Would you prefer Santa’s village or someplace warm and sunny?

Maui! I would choose the beach over the snow any day. Mele Kalikimaka!

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

The Christmas Story.

What are your favourite tunes for the festive season?

“Happy Xmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon, “Blue Christmas” by Elvis and “Last Christmas” by Wham!

What is the one thing that you can’t have enough of during Christmas? On the contrary, what is the one thing that you absolutely can’t stand anymore?

I can’t have enough eggnog, hot toddies and gingerbread. I can’t stand the Chipmunk Christmas song or the crowds.

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree in London. Who would you choose to design it and why?

When I was in London two Christmases ago, one of my favorite designers, Lanvin, had designed the Claridge’s tree. It was spectacular. But if I had to choose someone new to design the tree, it would be Balmain. The glitz and glitter of their designs would translate perfectly for the holiday season.

What type of Christmas tree would you be?

I would be a classic Douglas fir decorated with pinecones, blue jays and poinsettias. Simple and traditional.

Christmas Bloggers Special: Marta Pozzan talks about her love of Miu Miu, fashion must-haves this season and living the stylish life in L.A.

Marta Pozzan | Itssuperfashion

Visit Marta’s Shopcade and follow her to find out more about her style!

Los Angeles-based Italian fashion blogger and actress Marta Pozzan talks to Shopcade about her love for anything Miu Miu, modeling, her friend Jaime King, and – you guessed it – Christmas shopping! Fashion aficionados, feel free to take notes!

Hi Marta! Thanks for joining us for our Christmas special! What has been the best present you have received? And the one you would rather forget about?

The best present I’ve ever received was a military green Miu Miu coat. I love Miu Miu; it’s my favorite brand ever, so that gift was awesome. The ones that I’d rather forget are mainly earrings or bracelets I get gifted by people I’m not very close to, so they don’t really know my style or taste and I just end up never wearing them.

Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year’s holidays?

Yes, indeed. A white furry coat by Topshop I’m so obsessed with! Oversized furry coats are such a must-have this season.

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

“The Nightmare Before Christmas.” I know it’s a bit creepy but I used to love it as a kid.

What is the one thing that you can’t have enough of during Christmas? On the contrary, what is the one thing that you absolutely can’t stand anymore?

I think Christmas is such a good occasion indulge my sweet tooth; eating all sorts of candies or holiday desserts is just the nicest thing that could happen during Christmas. On the other hand, I’m really bored with all the Christmas decorations like lights and trees, they’re just always the same every year and unless they have an innovative design, I don’t really get impressed anymore.

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree in London. Who would you choose to design it and why?

Maison Martin Margiela. We need a Christmas tree that is not so Christmassy for once, but that’s more a piece of art and they’d be perfect for that.

What type of Christmas tree would you be?

All white and clear, made out of glass with milky white lights.

Christmas Bloggers Special: Camila Carril talks designer accessories and Brazilian fashion with Shopcade

on

blog-image-camila-carril

From Brazil with love! Fashion blogger Camila Carril chats about her love for designer accessories, why Vivienne Westwood should be designing Christmas trees and what’s on her Shopcade wish list this season…

We are getting close to Christmas! What’s in your Shopcade wish list?

A lot of things! You can check them out here!

What has been the best present you have received? And the one you would rather forget about?

I don’t have a gift I would rather forget. But I have one that I will always remember: six years ago my dad came home with a brand new suitcase. I knew what that meant. That was my best gift! The suitcase was his way to say he would allow me to come to London (at the time I was only 16). That changed everything and I will always remember the meaning of this gift.

Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year’s holidays?

I haven’t thought about that as yet. One thing I know, during New Year’s Eve in Brazil it is a tradition that we wear white! So whatever “it” fashion item would be white.

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

It has to be Home Alone.

What are your favourite tunes for the festive season?

John Lennon – Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
David Bowie and Bing Crosby – The Little Drummer Boy
Bruce Springsteen – Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town

I’m a sucker for a beach.

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

Christmas Blogger Special: Wendy Gilmour talks top trends for winter with Shopcade

on
blog.image-Wendy.Gilmour.QA-collage.3-041213-uk
Wendy Gilmour | ThankFiFi

Wendy Gilmour, the fashion blogger behind ThankFiFi talks top trends for winter, her fave celeb style and why she’s glad plaid is back in fashion this season…

Happy Holidays! Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year?
I just got a pink coat – a huge cliché obviously, but I’m in love!

OK, let’s talk about presents. What has been the best present you have received? And the one you would rather forget about?
Without a doubt Mr K, my puppy, was the best present EVER. Think I’d rather forget about the garlic grater my mother-in-law gave me a few years ago – it was a beautifully hand-painted grater dish… but I’m allergic to garlic.

What would be your dream holiday destination? Would you prefer Santa’s village or someplace warm and sunny?
Skiing in the snow every time! I got married in Chamonix, France, four winters ago, skiing with all my friends and family – plenty of fresh air, snow, sun, mulled wine, cheese and great memories.

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree. Who would you choose to design it and why?
Myself, obviously!

What type of Christmas tree would you be?
A real pine tree. Definitely because of the smell and I’m a sucker for the classics: plenty of gold and red, but I’d throw in a bit of crazy fun, maybe some clashing hot pink? I’d stick to baubles though and plenty of lights; no tinsel, thank you!

PR Guru Courtney Blackman talks UK/US style with Shopcade

on
blog.image-kate.gorbunova1-201113-uk
Photographs by Kate Gorbunova and Sam Atkinson

Courtney Blackman, founder of Forward PR and Managing Director of The Industry London, chats to Shopcade about her unusual Christmas wardrobe this year, hanging out with Kate Nash and why David Gandy is a true gent…

Hi Courtney! Thank you for joining us for this Christmas Special. What’s in your Shopcade Wish List for the season?

Have a peek! @Courtney Blackman

Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year’s holidays?

I’m going to Kauai for Christmas – I’ll be in bikinis, cut-offs and t-shirts with a surfboard.

What are your favourite tunes for the festive season?

Kate Nash is putting out a Christmas EP, so obviously the songs on the EP will be my favourites. I’ve also just starting representing indie band Early Morning Rebel from Los Angeles, and while their music isn’t Christmassy it is awesome and I will have it on my iPod over the holidays.

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

I love the film Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton – it’s hilarious. Also, Home Alone and Elf.

What would be your dream holiday destination? Would you prefer Santa’s village or someplace warm and sunny?

Anywhere around the equator! I grew up spending my winters in the British Virgin Islands and The Netherland Antilles. Sun for me please.

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree. Who would you choose to design it and why?

Alice Palmer. She’s a knitwear master and I can’t think of anything cosier than a knit Christmas tree – but with Alice’s trademark spikes as such to make it edgy.

What type of Christmas tree would you be?

I would be a Balsam Fir Christmas tree, grown in Nova Scotia and I would be covered in lots of crystal icicle ornaments, white ribbons, white globe ornaments, tiny white fairy lights and star on top.

What is the one thing that you can’t have enough of during Christmas and what is the one thing that you absolutely can’t stand anymore?

Food! I revel in gorging on food. Christmas is permission to really go for it and I do. I could do without the non-stop Christmas advertising everywhere. It makes me feel stressed out.

OK enough of Christmas! Shall we talk business? You started Forward PR in 2004. How has the fashion scene in London changed since then?

Fashion has changed a lot and in some places not at all. We’re still on the antiquated six-month lead-time from shows to retail delivery, but I’m sure that will change soon enough. On the flipside, social media has revolutionised the way the industry interacts, especially from a PR angle. With the launch of Facebook in 2004, Twitter in 2006, Instagram and Pinterest in 2010 and the onslaught of bloggers over the years, fashion has exploded. It’s more transparent and has a larger voice than ever before. Conventional methods of PR have completely shifted. Companies across fashion from designers to photographers to retailers to magazines now have a huge opportunity for direct communication and engagement. All it takes is time… and being a clever communicator.

Can you tell us about The Industry London? What is the concept behind it?

The Industry is a members-only private networking group for fashion professionals. It was launched in order to bring together the people that form the foundation of the fashion community, as often times stylists, milliners, etc. work in solitude, so coming together at regular meetings gives people a chance to interact and create new business together. Our members span the industry from lawyers to bloggers to pattern cutters to filmmakers to manufacturers – emerging to top-level, well-known industry personalities. Our meetings are relaxed and fun and we’re currently working with London’s Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design as our venue partner.

THE INDUSTRY DAVID G#AB6DFF

You work with celebrities like Kate Nash and you recently hosted a talk with David Gandy. What does it feel like collaborating with all these high-profile people?

Kate Nash is honestly one of the nicest people I’ve ever encountered. Not only is she insanely talented (she writes all her own music, plays piano, guitar, bass, drums… and starred in three films in 2013), she’s so kind with her fans, she’s genuine, honest and generous. Working with someone like Kate is amazing and I feel really lucky to be a part of her team. David Gandy joined us for one of our Industry meetings, where he was interviewed by the legendary Hilary Alexander and he was very charming. He shared so much about ‘brand Gandy’, which was fascinating and he stayed on for ages accommodating every single person that wanted a photograph with him, which was a lot – a true gent

How has your work in fashion changed the way you view this exciting industry?

I love working in fashion. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of the most creative and respected people in the industry, and some of my closest friends also work in fashion (i.e. superstar fashion and celebrity stylist Rebekah Roy) – it has a tendency of melting into one’s personal life.

You were born in the US. How is London different to NYC when it comes to trends and style?

I was born in Denver and I’ve spent most of my adult life in London, with stints in Central America (Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic) and not really in NYC, but based on visits to the Big Apple (I have family in Manhattan and Brooklyn), I would say New Yorkers dress a bit safer than Londoners. Londoners aren’t afraid to look “creative” and experiment and mix colours, patterns, vintage, designer…I definitely think the way people dress in London is more fun.

Speaking of style, what is the one thing that you wouldn’t want to be seen wearing?

Revealing sandals. I have the most unattractive feet. Ever.

What kind of combinations make you cringe when you see them?

Not really anything. The way someone chooses to express themselves should be completely free and liberating.

Which strategy is best according to you: investing in some quality, yet expensive staples or spend on a lot of cheaper items for a more diverse look?

A bit of both. Having good quality investment pieces in good fabrics is really important, especially as you get older, as quality fabric, good cuts and structure are going to be far more flattering. For testing out seasonal trends, it’s nice to be able to incorporate a selection of high street finds, but I’m not a huge fan of buying too much throwaway fashion. It feels kind of irresponsible.

If you could press a button and control everyone’s taste, what would you make people wear?

Anything they wanted. I couldn’t think of anything more boring than controlling other people’s creativity.

What’s the one thing that you are waiting patiently from a fashion designer to discover/ come up with?

The perfect sandals for unattractive feet!

Christmas Blogger Special: Amy Valentine shares her style inspiration with Shopcade

on

blog.image-Amy Valentine.QA-collage4-151113-uk

Beauty and style blogger Amy Valentine chats about her love of Pokémon, her top nail tips and why she thinks Britain’s fashion darling Ashish would be a good Christmas tree designer! Welcome to her pink world of fun…

Welcome to our Christmas special! Tell us what’s in your Shopcade wish list?

Lots of sparkles and cosy layers for winter!

What has been the best present you have received? And the one you would rather forget about?

I think the best present I’ve ever received is my Nikon D3200. It’s the camera I use for all my blog stuff and I use it nearly every day! I can’t exactly remember the worst present I’ve received, but it’s the thought that counts!

Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year’s holidays?

I do indeed, it has got to be my new Vivienne Westwood handbag I got for my birthday – I love it so much I’ll be using it constantly!

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree. Who would you choose to design it and why?

I can’t imagine what the tree would look like if it was designed by Ashish – probably covered with sequins and obscenities, it would be awesome!

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

Probably Elf – it’s hilarious and always puts me in a festive mood.

What type of Christmas tree would you be?

If I was a Christmas tree I’d definitely be pink, with lots of sparkly decorations please!

Amy 2

So, let’s move onto your blog! You describe yourself as socially awkward. Why is that?

That’s quite a question – but I guess it’s pretty self-explanatory; I’m not the most confident person in real life, that’s all!

What’s the one trend that you can’t have enough of?

I am loving tartan at the moment and although it was more of a spring/summer trend, monochrome has made its way into winter and I’m a sucker for a good tonal outfit.

You have a special section about nails in your blog. Care to share your best tips and favourite products?

I do indeed! My favourite nail varnish brand is definitely OPI and I’m getting much more into deeper colours now that autumn is upon us. My tip would be to invest in a good top coat, as it helps nail varnish stay for so much longer!

What is the best and the worst part of being a blogger?

The best part is obviously the gifts you get and also I’ve made some lovely blogger friends and attended some great parties – although blogging is extremely time consuming and I spend almost every hour of every day doing something blog related!

What’s the funniest/weirdest email or comment you have received from a fan?

I love receiving messages from my followers, although I’m not much of a fan of creepy foreign guys asking me to webcam with them… no thanks!

Where do you get inspiration from when it comes to style?

From other fashion bloggers or Tumblr photos usually. I find that trends appear earlier there – also there’s always fresh looks to get inspiration from and interpret them into your own personal style.

What kind of combinations make you cringe when you see them?

I can’t really think of anything off the top of my head – maybe things like matching tracksuits and that kind of thing!

blog.image-Amy Valentine.QA-collage7-151113-uk

If you could press a button and control everyone’s taste, what would you make people wear?

I think if I had to choose I would not push the button – just because although there are some people with less desirable taste in clothes, it would be far too boring if everyone had the same style!

What’s the one thing that you are waiting patiently from a fashion designer to come up with?

Definitely a high street store to release a budget version of the gorgeous leather and sequin Filles A Papa jacket that’s featured in my Shopcade wish list!

What is it that you like about Pokémon so much?

It was one of the major things I grew up with so it has just stayed with me – I got the new game recently and love it!

And finally…Aliens invade the planet and you need to convince them to spare your blog! What do you say to them?

Hmm, maybe ‘please spare my blog – I’ll let you share my wardrobe…?’

We don’t know about you, but we heart Amy! To find out more about the Pink and Pokemon Queen herself, check out her blog here >> Amy Valentine

Christmas Bloggers Special: Patrick Pankalla shares his fashion secrets with Shopcade…

on

blog.image-guy.in.black-131113-uk

In the first of our Christmas blogger specials, we chat to Danish fashion blogger Patrick Pankalla about Christmas in Scandinavia, the best shopping spots in Copenhagen, and his aversion to… moon boots!

So, it’s nearly Christmas! What’s on your Shopcade wish list?

I’ve ran out of perfume, so that’s on my wish list. Otherwise you’ll find clothes, accessories, shoes, and a new Canon camera that I want so badly.

What has been the best present you have received? And the one you would rather forget about?

The best present must have been a trip to the United States that my father arranged for me. One of the worst was a karaoke machine. I can’t sing – everybody knows that!

What would be your dream holiday destination? Would you prefer Santa’s village or some place warm and sunny?

I’d love to travel to a warm and sunny destination. It’s so damn cold here in Denmark; however, it’s part of Christmas I think. I would find it strange to celebrate Christmas somewhere sunny. That’s just not how we do it in Scandinavia.

Do you have an ‘it’ fashion item that you are planning to wear for this year’s holidays?

Not really, but I’m always wearing something red!

What are your favourite tunes for the festive season?

I have a mix tape with the best and all the classic Christmas songs. I always listen to it during the season.

What is the one thing that you can’t have enough of during Christmas? Also, what is the one thing that you absolutely can’t stand anymore?!

I can’t get enough of confections and the Christmas dinner – so delicious. I can’t stand mulled wine.

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree. Who would you choose to design it and why?

I would love to see Maison Martin Margiela design it. I can imagine that the tree would be the strangest seen ever, but beautiful in its own way.

blog.image-guy.in.black.square-131113-uk

And what about you, what kind of Christmas tree would you be?

I love to break traditions, so I’d probably be a Christmas tree that no one has ever seen before. A non-traditional, but amazing Christmas tree!

Let’s talk about your blog now… How did you get started?

I’m a Danish fashion blogger – the biggest in Denmark in my age group. Besides that, I’m working as a freelance photographer. I always put quality in the first row, especially when it comes to my blog and its design and photo material. I try to inspire my readers in my own way, and my blog is mostly about fashion and photography, with a touch of travel and my everyday life. It all started because I wanted to inspire and share stuff with people other than my friends and family. Now I’m loving it and can’t see an everyday life without it.

You also run your own e-shop. What kind of items can we find there?

I basically sell items from my wardrobe, stuff that I can’t fit in anymore. It gets updated with new items once in a while.

Traveling seems to be an important part of your blogging life. What’s the best place you have visited so far?

I love traveling and have been doing it a lot. My all-time favourite city must be New York. I’ve been there twice and I fell in love with the city both times. I wanna live there some day – it’s a big dream of mine.

What are your favourite shopping spots in Copenhagen?

You’ll find everything on the main street called “Strøget.” You can compare it with Oxford Street in London – it’s just smaller. If you take a walk down the side streets, you’ll find the best and cosiest shops and cafes. It’s there where you’ll find the hidden treasures when it comes to shopping.

Where are we most likely to find you on a Friday night?

It’s very different from Friday to Friday. As much as I like going out drinking and clubbing, I enjoy staying home and relaxing with a cup of coffee and a great series on TV.

What’s the funniest/weirdest email or comment you have received from a fan?

A few days ago I received the following comment to an outfit post: “What size do you use in shoes? I think your feet look way too big in your shoes and it’s a no-go.” Dude, sorry that my feet are big. It’s not like I can do anything about it!

blog.image-guy.in.black.vertical-131113-ukLet’s talk about personal style now. What’s the one thing that you wouldn’t want to be seen wearing?

A kilt. That’s just odd!

What kind of combinations make you cringe when you see them?

It makes me cringe when I see people wearing denim from head to toe. I just don’t get it!

Guys and shopping seem to be a little contradictory. What about you? Do you enjoy going to the stores?

I love going shopping. I don’t understand why it’s a taboo in some circles of friends. There’s nothing better than new clothes. Get yourself together guys.

If you could press a button and control everyone’s taste, what would you make people wear?

I won’t tell  what I would make them wear, but what they shouldn’t wear. Moon boots and checkered Vans is a huge no-go.

What’s the one thing that you are waiting patiently from a fashion designer to come up with?

That’s a tough question. I actually don’t know. If high street stores like H&M, Zara, COS and Cheap Monday just made clothes that were more fashionable and still with budget-friendly prices, then people would look more stylish.
