Check again! When it comes to music and style, Harley Viera-Newton is definitely one of our biggest inspirations, so we are more than excited to have her play for Shopcade’s holiday shopping event in NYC on December 12!

We managed to chat with her about Christmas gifts, her collaboration with Jay Z and his music label, and her hottest spots in London and New York!

With Christmas getting really close, we really have to start this interview with questions about presents! What has been the best present you have received?

My boyfriend designed a necklace for me with my best friend and I haven’t taken it off since. I love four-leaf clovers, and they made a little silver clover with H’s on each leaf. It’s amazing.

What would be your dream holiday destination? Would you prefer Santa’s village or someplace warm and sunny?

I’m a sucker for a beach.

Which film puts you in the spirit of Christmas?

Love Actually.

What are your favorite tunes for the festive season?

Mariah Carey, Wham, The Waitresses.

What is the one thing that you can’t have enough of during Christmas?

Mum’s cooking! Chocolate! Presents! Can Christmas be all year, please?

Claridges Christmas Tree 1

[Claridge’s Dolce & Gabbana Christmas tree]

Dolce & Gabbana were the designers behind the famous Claridge’s Christmas tree. Who would you choose to design it and why?

I’m sure the Dolce one is amazing. They would be high up on my list. I bet Asprey would do an incredible one.

And what about you? What type of Christmas tree would you be?

We decorate our tree at home with all different kinds of ornaments we’ve collected over the years. So there’s no rhyme or reason but lots of memories. So I’d be a pretty crazy looking tree with lots of stories.

You lead quite an exciting life, so we definitely want to ask you about it! You were born in London, moved to Los Angeles, and studied in New York. Which city do you call home and what are the things that you like most about it?

I’m lucky enough to still spend a lot of time in all three cities. I always have nostalgia for my early years in London and love visiting, and my family is in L.A. and I spend most holidays there. But New York is my home now. I’ve been here seven years and can’t imagine leaving any time soon…there’s no other city quite as special

As a DJ for famous clubs and venues like Le Bain, what are the hottest spots in New York and London right now?

I recently went to Paul Sevigny’s new club in New York, Baby Grand, and had a great time. The décor is cosy and I love the vibe. I was last in London for fashion week and spent a lot of time at the Edition Hotel – it’s a great place to meet friends for drinks.

You are part of Roc Nation, Jay Z’s music management label. How did this collaboration start? What has impressed you most about him?

What doesn’t impress me about him? The Roc Nation partnership was a dream come true. When I graduated from college I had to decide whether or not to give the DJ thing a real go, and I met with a few managers. I knew immediately after leaving the Roc Nation meeting that it was the right fit. I had to pinch myself and it took me a while to process that it was real.

You are also curating playlists for several brands including Belstaff. What is the music selection process like for each brand? How do you decide what tracks to choose?

Whenever I work on music for brands it’s always at least somewhat of a collaboration. I’ll look at the clothes, a mood board, or event specs, and gage the overall vibe they want to achieve. Then I use my gut response to create those moods. Sometimes I have full freedom to create whatever I want, other times it’s more of a conversation.

Speaking of fashion brands, how has your personal style evolved over the years? Do you have any “I can’t believe I wore this” moments?

I went through a punk phase when I first moved to N.Y. Lots of creepers and Boy London jackets. Which was fun, but I grew out of it. I guess my personal style has just grown up a bit, as I have.

What kind of combinations make you cringe when you see them?

Ironic T-shirts.

See Harley DJ on December 12th at our holiday shopping event in NYC! Don’t forget to check her Shopcade list for a sneak peek of what she’ll be wearing and the gifts she’s looking forward to giving from Henri Bendel.
