Get Lucky: How To Go Green AND Stay Stylish on St. Patrick’s Day!

Even though we’re not Irish (not even close, actually!) we take the opportunity to channel a little of that Leprachaun luck every year on March 17th. That day is St. Patrick’s Day and if you’re like us (and may others around the country) you celebrate by wearing your your finest green attire with a cold pint in hand.

Since the holiday falls on a Monday this year, work and/or school will be involved. Ughhh. We’re guessing we can’t wear our new mint crop top and plaid tam o ‘shanter to the Editorial Meeting without a few side-eyes. We decided to class it up a bit with some items that incorporate our fave St. Patrick’s day themes – four leaf clovers and shades of green o’plenty – without going overboard. (After 5pm is up in the air!)

Not partaking in the festivities? Here’s a kickstart to adding a fresh hue to your wardrobe this spring! Because there is ALWAYS a silver lining to every cloud errr…pot of gold at the end of every rainbow. 😉

Fest Dressed: Cowboy, Americana, and Navajo – Three Trends to Try at SXSW

It’s time to dust off our flower crowns, girls. (Wait, are those still a thing?) It’s festival season!!! Yes, you’ve heard right. Our favorite time of year is near. The time when winter becomes a distant memory and the spring and summer seasons are ushered with live music – and a lot of it.

SXSW, based in Austin, TX, kicks it off each year. The inaugural fest is different than the rest in that it’s spread throughout the entire town of Austin. There are no camp grounds or gates here, the ENTIRE town becomes a music fest. Aside from being encapsulated in tunes, you’ll also be inundated with some of the best tacos EV-ER. Just those two things alone should sell you.

The big question is, what do you wear to fit in at a fest located in the south? To put it simply, go west Well, west-ern. We recommend denim and navajo print with a splash of classic Americana. And, don’t forget the cowboy boots.

Here are the three festival fashion trends you’re going to want to try when heading to SXSW.

Channel your inner John Wayne (or Madonna circa her “Music” album phase) at the Austin-based fest. The idea is to pepper in a little of the trend – seen all over the NYFW runways – into your everyday wardrobe. Otherwise, you risk getting mistaken for a rodeo queen instead of a street style star. Don’t know about you but we prefer the latter. Achieve this with a fringe statement piece and a fun pair of western-ispired boots – those are the key

GET THE LOOK | Staring At Stars Suede Fringe Moto Jacket, $299, available at Urban Outfitters; Studded Cowboy Booties, $32.80, available at Forever 21; Sweet Jane Round Sunglasses, $16, available at Urban Outfitters; Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – Matte Kava Kava 0.33 oz, $18, available at Sephora

We’re three-quarters of the way done with fashion week season. So far, we’ve spotted street style at New York Fashion Week, threw a crazy bash in London for LFW, and, as we speak, have our eyes glued to for all the new collections in Milan. If you’re anything like us, you’re already plotting your moves for next fall. Of course, we can’t wait for spring and summer but September through November are our favorite months to put outfits together. Hello, boots, scarves, and chunky knit sweaters! You know exactly what we mean.

After scanning the runways of some of our favorite designers for NYFW fall trends, we started to notice a handful of trends that, um, we weren’t so sure we’d be embracing…even six months from now. We asked our friends at Betches Love This – the snarky internet-BFFs that tell it like it is on everything from bros to celeb style – for their take on sleeveless coats, menswear-insipred footwear, bright red, and more. Because, if anyone will tell us the truth, they will!

“Don’t eh’stomp your last season high heeled Loubs at me honay.” But really, I don’t know any straight man who would ever wear a bow on his shoe, so this isn’t menswear. This is a pointy leather shoe with a chunky kitten heel. And if you ever wore these out, no man would ever hit on you no matter how hot you were, because he’d think – nay- know you were a lesbian.

Omg. RED. I would have never thought to wear red if someone, especially the man who designs dresses like Zoe Saldana’s for the Golden Globes, had come up with the idea! His inspo must’ve definitely been Game of the Thrones Red Wedding. Anyway, Redddddd!! Taylor Swift must be pleased with herself.

30+ Winter Street Style Snaps From NY Fashion Week

winter street stylewinter street style

New York Fashion Week was quite nippy this time around so you’d expect a lot of frumpy fashionistas battling the cold in their toughest arctic-worthy gear. But, alas, they surprised us by making due with their duds and somehow, as if by magic, turning them into some of the finest looks we’ve ever laid eyes on. The trick – color, color, and more color. Pink, yellow, orange, and blue were everywhere! It was as if spring had sprung!

Others opted for texture  – the fur was flying. We can’t help but think the Olympic games in Sochi had a little something to do with it. Plus, we spotted a couple of gutsy ladies wearing the PVC trend. Not warm but, hey, at least they looked amazing.

If you need some help getting a handle on your cold weather style these last few weeks of the cold season, we snapped over 30 guys and girls on the streets of NYC who will help inspire you to wear something other than your puffy coat. In fact, this winter street style might even help you get some ideas for the warmer months ahead.

Looking for A Boyfriend? Here are 5 Items to AVOID On Your First Date

We chatted with Laurie Davis, founder of eFlirt Expert and author of Love @ First Click, about, what else, dating. The relationship expert sat down to give us some tips on snagging a dude. Step number one in finding the love of your life – dress the part. Below are her top five no-no’s when it comes to first date fashion. Read below to find out what’s in her Shopcade and what to wear on your next date to make this your last single Valentine’s Day.

When date night comes, you probably have a few go-to items in your closet – staples that you look totally fab in. But remember that men view things a little differently than women. Sometimes the fashion that we love most, they hate so your favorite outfit won’t necessarily be his. And since our bodies are so complicated with all their curves, the fit of something may be fun to you but a turn off to him. But don’t freak! As a tech and dating coach, I work with both guys and gals every day and hear their gripes about dates … including fashion faux pas. Below are some fashion don’ts for dates and an easy, doable substitute for each that will make you totally smoochable.

It’s scientifically proven that guys don’t like wedges. (Well, sort of – a survey shows that 71% of men find them the least attractive footwear around. Also on the list of shoes guys hate: UGGS, Crocs, and flip flops.) And yes, this includes wedge sneakers.
Instead, wear heels (even if they are low ones) because they’ll visually elongate your legs and add some va-va-voom.

Peplum anything

While peplum tops and dresses are on-trend, they aren’t the most figure-flattering thing a girl can wear, unless you’re curve-less. Remember that a first date is a first impression and showing off your shape is part of that! Visually enhancing it with more curves will nearly always give the impression that you’re heavier than you are. Even if you are thin, it might look like you’re hiding something under those ruffles…
Instead, flex your trendster heart by going with something high-waisted which looks awesome on most body types.

6 Items That Will Get You Noticed at NYFW

These six fashion editor approved essentials are sure to get you noticed this fashion week…

      1. Cool Outerwear: A/W fashion week falls in the beginning of February every year so it’s inevitable that outerwear will be a staple of your ensemble. Our fave for the past couple of seasons has been the tomboy-chic bomber also referred to as a varsity jacket. The best way to get noticed by the massive heard of street style photogs patrolling NYC during NYFW is by choosing one in a bold print. Floral or a black and white window pane print are our top picks.
      2. Wild Carryall: Whether you’re a blogger going from show to show or just a fashionable onlooker checking out the runway via, having a chic carryall in your closet is a must. All-over logo prints are everywhere for Spring. If incorporating them into a piece of clothing is too much, why not try an accessory? We like the MCM’s revamped backpack – they had a serious moment in the 90s hip hop scene. (Can’t you totally see Lil Kim rocking one?!) And, hey, IT IS Throwback Thursday, after all!
      3. Shades: When getting snapped avoid the curse of camera shyness while, ahem, covering up your unwanted eye circles with a kooky pair of sunnies. The weeklong cycle of parties, shows, and madness are bound to take their toll and when they do show ’em who’s boss. Take charge with a wacky color or bold-shaped frame. Oversized Miu Miu cat eyes? Don’t mind if we do!
      4. Ankle Strap Heels: NYC is generally a walking city. When you’re traveling around the island during NYFW it’s cabs, cabs, cabs. And, the subway, sometimes – if we have to. If your main mode of transport for the week will bring you from cab to curb, wear your heels! Right now we are mega-obsessed with ankle-strap pumps. Splurge on a pair of Alexander Wang’s or steal these floral print statement-makers from Target for $29.99.
      5. Phone Charger: I mean, the whole point of going to NYFW is to brag about it on Instagram, right? Yeah, we thought so. With all the snapping you’ll be doing it’s a smart move or shall we say power play to suit ip your iPhone with an all-in-one case charger. Because, let’s be honest – having a dead battery in NOT CHIC.
      6. Crop Top: If you haven’t noticed, skin is in. Yes, even in winter! Show off those mid drifts in a transitional winter-to-spring boxy crop top. Feeling eccentric? Pair it with a matching bottom – cigarette pants or a full skirt – for a suit that is sure to get your on every street style blog this NYFW 2014. Maybe even ours? 😉

Taylor Swift Dishes Dating Advice Just In Time for Valentine’s Day

Taylor Swift March cover

Patrick Demarchelier/Glamour Magazine

As Valentine’s Day quickly approaches, you can’t help but feel the love in the air. To celebrate the official month de amour, Glamour Mag covered their March issue (on stands February 11th) with professional heartbreaker slash hit maker, Taylor Swift.

The blonde beauty, looking gorgeous as ever in a red lace Rachel Comey dress dished dating advice for both single and taken gals alike in her Q&A. Swift is all about the “freeze-out” when trying to get the upper hand back in a relationship. A move we bet she uses on all the guys she knew were trouble when they walked in. Yes, we’re talking to you John Mayer (and probably Joe Jonas, too).

In a relationship? Here are Taylor’s thoughts on why you should never yell:

“Silence speaks so much louder than screaming tantrums. Never give anyone an excuse to say that you’re crazy.”

Single? Taylor on doing the “freeze-out” when dating:

“I think everyone should approach relationships from the perspective of playing it straight and giving someone the benefit of the doubt. Until he establishes that this is a game. And if it’s a game, you need to win. The best thing to do is just walk away from the table.”
